Work with your leadership strengths
Activists and Advocates are both essential for social change - and sometimes undervalued.
Activists: often admired for their bravery, energy, and fresh ideas.
But their relentless disruption of the status quo can be seen as difficult to work with, or their leadership forgotten when the change they fought for is finally celebrated.
Without activists, we get entrenched in our assumptions about what’s right, and what’s possible.
Activists light the fire so we see a new way forward.
Advocates: just as essential, but often less visible.
Working within existing systems, they help others navigate from the old to the new - their gentle questions steadily nudge us in a better direction.
Resilient, but quieter leaders, their work can easily be overlooked.
Without advocates, change movements quickly burn out once we hit the slow-moving, foundational barriers that prop up the status quo.
Together, they become an unstoppable team, and we need both to rethink the future, and keep moving forward.
