Online vs In-person; how to choose the best way to work with your community

Because kanohi ki te kanohi doesn’t automatically mean a better experience. We’ve all been to hui where people left feeling disconnected.

But when it’s done well, in-person can be magic.

I always come back to one question:

Who’s the audience, and what’s the purpose?

Are you trying to:
make it easy to be involved, or
create lasting memories?

In-person is worth the extra time, cost and care, when:

  • You need to break out of the day-to-day

  • People genuinely want to be there

  • The space adds something special

  • We have time for unplanned moments

Online is efficient, cost-effective, and can be really inclusive. And in-person can be magic - if it’s done well.

And hybrid? Only if you have a plan and facilitators for both audiences.
